ambidex voting #15

A M B I D E X  V O T I N G

Once everyone exits their respective rooms, Zero's voice will be heard over the speakers:

"Proceed into the Ambidex Rooms and cast your vote. You will be given 45 minutes to decide."

And with that, the elevator doors open and the PA system turns itself off. It seems as if there are no rewards or any of that nonsense this time around...

"Yeah, no problem." Heiji sat back and dug a spoon into the gruel, boy oh boy. "...Hey, Hershel. Do you think we might be thinking about this all wrong? Our situation, I mean."

"Taking away someone's memories and bringing them back, that's one thing. It's possible in theory because you don't really erase them... you prevent that person from being able to access those memories for a while, that's all. But giving me someone else's memory, that's something else altogether. It's not like I could have gotten it back, because it didn't happen to me in the first place, understand?

"The ability to take someone's memories, store them, and give them to someone else... that's something no one can do. No one I've heard of, anyway. It's the same with Calhoun -- why didn't we recognize the machinery making him work?"

Hershel glanced up from his delicious food, regarding Heiji curiously as he spoke. As he went his brow furrowed too, because he had a feeling what Heiji was getting at.

"Not only that but if Calhoun really is an AI that's far beyond anything that should be possible, at least from what little I can remember." He added. "But what do you think that means? Zero clearly has access to resources and technology we seem barely able to comprehend."

"Well, we been at this from every logical angle, right? But none of the conclusions we've been coming to have made much sense," said Heiji. He tapped his fingers on the surface of the table. "In that case, maybe we need to re-examine our premises. Who, what, and where we are."

He deliberately left out the when. "When the blackout happened, the heat started to go real fast. That would suggest that wherever we are, it's somewhere that's similarly cold. Underground maybe, or somewhere with a naturally cold climate.

"There're multiple generators here, which we saw, and the doors around here are more than strong enough to ensure that a normal person or even multiple people can't get out if they're locked down. Sounds like a bunker with redundant power sources to me. And what do people use bunkers for?"
