the garden

T H E  G A R D E N

Early in the morning, yet again, the test subjects get to wake up to Calhoun’s dulcet tones. Through a megaphone.

“Hey! Lazy test subjects, get your human rears up!”

Once everyone is moderately awake and gathered, Calhoun will continue.

“You all did such a great job last round, and everyone’s been so pathetic lately, that I, your glorious, merciful host, decided to open a room for you! Remember, rooms are a privilege, not a right! That means!”

He takes a deep breath to scream out the next parts:

Don’t. Break. My. Stuff!!

He eyes at a few people in the crowd before leading everyone up to the second floor, where a new door will now be openable. Once inside there is a surprisingly refreshing breeze and bright light flooding from the ceiling.

Welcome to the Garden!

The roof of the garden is made up of what appears to be grids with screens depicting a blue sky during daylight hours and a starry night during the evening (they must be sunlamps because the light from the ceiling feels warm and, yes, finally some vitamin D for you sad test subjects). It appears to be more of a dome than anything else, but the grass is green, there’s a few trees around, some flowers, a bench here and there, and even a little waterfall that creates a small creek around the garden!

Sure, there aren’t any edible plants, fruits, or vegetables around, the water is freezing, everything feels almost artificial, but this is a lot better than the cold, monochrome, and bleak look of the warehouse so far, so unless everyone else wanted to stay in the boring lobby instead of here, there wasn’t much to complain about.

Well, have fun! Enjoy your new surroundings.

[You say that as if there are other puzzle guys on the side, Zelos.

Hershel glances over, offering a smile.]
No- I was actually just wondering if we'd even get a sunrise. In a way it'd be the first we ever saw, at least for a while, until our memories of others returned.
cursedchosen: (I'll see you in the mornin'.)

[Puzzle guys, probably not. But there might be a few lawyers that Zelos is pretty familiar with who are also kind of okay at puzzles.]

[And Zelos smirks (smiles?) in return.]

That'd be pretty nice. [Which, in Zelos' mind, made it even less likely, but maybe Zero wasn't 100% a lying, murderous, psychopath. He could be 99%.]

Wouldn't count on it, but if he bothered to give us this garden in the first place, he might've decided that more sun was what we needed.

[Good enough, as long as they aren't Phoenix Wright and Co.]

It's been 26 days, almost a month... It's hard to believe, isn't it? I'm guessing even Zero knows people need sunlight.

[his tone goes a touch dry] Now if only he would give us food with some actual, nutritional value.
cursedchosen: (So goodnight cruel world...)

Yeah, 26 days in this hellhole would do it for anyone. Maybe next he'll decide that a good morale booster would be a bar.

[Although Zelos didn't want to think what the quality of the alcohol might be like.]

Gah, I hope so. All the things in this place ready to kill us, starvation shouldn't be one of 'em.

I'd be a little frightened to see what kind of drinks a bar manned by Calhoun would serve. [and a pause. didn't ema say something about this... ]

Mr. Wilder, do you know what prison wine is? I haven't the faintest clue.

Y'know, I don't know either, and with a name like that, I don't want to.

[There were plenty of good cocktails with strange names, but there was something about it being called "Prison" that was off-putting. It sounded like something Calhoun would give them, and that just made the whole idea worse.]

That's what I felt when I heard it. [Sounds like something that would kill you or blind you or be used to bleach clothing or something. He makes a face.]

Ema mentioned it at some point, I'm a little afraid of seeing what she cooks up if she really does find a way to make it.
