He nodded. "It's a little frightening, isn't it? That people can be that good at acting." He tossed his stupid whistle to the side, probably too grim a conversation for dumb grass whistles. "I wonder who he really was and what Zero and Calhoun promised him. Safety, maybe? His memories? I doubt he was foolish enough to believe them saying they'd release him."

And he shook his head. "I wonder if he really would have killed Kuzuryuu in that grey room if had been a real gun. I suppose that doesn't really matter now."

"Maybe safety. Knowing where the traps were, for instance, or bein' guaranteed that any Calhoun Hours wouldn't screw him over too bad. The way you were describin' him... maybe part of it was getting to watch us struggle while he was in the know." Simon, you jerk.

At the mention of Kuzuryuu, Heiji frowned. "You know what? When I got a chance to look over that footage of what happened in the other rooms, I saw how Kuzuryuu answered those questions in that first grey room."

"I suppose so..." Grim, thanks Simon. "I want to believe he had better reasons than that but- well, he never really seemed to give us any reason to think so."

Hershel blinked, suddenly pretty curious. "Really? What did he say?" He asked before frowning. "You know when we first met he used to argue with me all the time about keeping a weapon, that if someone tried to kill you you had to kill them. I understand what he was trying to get at, even if I disagreed, but I always wondered why he had such a bleak outlook on people."

"...Yeah, that sounds like him, all right. I won't bore ya with details, but his answer made it clear that he wasn't just thinkin' about banning tall people or not based on what he thought was fair to him, or fair to that hypothetical person. He took the scenario into account. The question involved a ruler who had to make that decision for his people, right? He was concerned about his responsibility to his subjects. As a ruler, he felt that he had to take their feelings into account."

Heiji smiled a little. "So if that guy really was a gangster or somethin', I bet he'd have been good to his subordinates."

Hershel just listened, feeling a sharp pang at the fact Kuzuryuu was gone. "He was a good person, I believe that without a doubt. I don't know about all this gang business... he was so young. I wonder, if it's true, how he got involved in all that."

He sighed, rubbing his arm. "I really want to believe they're all still alive, as hopeless at it seems sometimes. Maybe we'll find him one day."

"Yeah... Wirt, too." Of course, who knew what had happened to them at this point...? But if anyone could stay alive, it was Kuzuryuu, right?

Heiji shook his head. "Sorry, didn't mean to make you depressed. I just wanted to say it 'cause everyone kept sayin' how he was just like Jake. But that's not true at all. He's got a foul mouth, but Kuzuryuu really thinks about other people."

Hershel offered a smile, raising his hand. "No, it's important to keep talking about them, whether it be depressing or not. They don't deserve to be brushed under the rug." He leaned back a bit. "And I'm glad to hear that about him. You know, Calhoun, in that truth or dare grey room, he told him he hadn't had any friends before. I really can't imagine why, once you got to know him-"

He shook his head. "I'm glad these rooms will be over soon, hopefully Calhoun will have something a little calmer up his sleeve next."

"Yeah? What a jerk." Seriously, that was like a playground insult or something. "Besides, Kuzuryuu had that girl he was always with, right? She had to be his friend. Or maybe his girlfriend."

Heiji laughed. Right, Calhoun doing something nice and calm. "Well, I ain't holding my breath. But it'd be nice. I kinda prefer not bein' stabbed. Just a personal preference, y'know."

"I think that's what he was worried about, that he wasn't her friend." Hershel mused. "I'd like to think that's because they were something more and Calhoun was twisting words around. Maybe they were family."

Yeah, that is hoping for a lot. Hershel looked vaguely amused despite himself. "I'd be very happy if no one was stabbed for a long while, honestly. I was rather hoping we were mostly done with that."

Hmm. "Well, it can be kinda tough to make friends if you're spoutin' off all the time," said Heiji. "I mean, you'd probably scare a bunch of people off before they got a chance to know ya. But they sounded pretty close, so maybe you're right."

Heiji frowned a little and glanced down at his leg. "Once you get done with the next room, I guess... I guess I can tell ya about a couple things that've been bothering me about it."

"I suppose so, it certainly made Clive irritated as far as I can tell." Then again Clive did enjoy holding grudges, so who knew. Probably a mixture of both.

And Hershel nodded, growing solemn. "This room coming up seems to have bothered a lot of people. Whenever anyone talks about it they seem troubled, even Jake to some extent."

"Yeah?" That was interesting. "Even Jake? He say somethin' to you?"

Of course, probably anyone would be surprised at a reveal like that...

"Not much, mostly he just said it was a tough room. I don't think he wanted to get into it too much, given there's not much he could say to me without getting in trouble. Clive spoke a little more about it, I'm sure he told you much more, of course."

Hershel shrugged. "I don't think whatever happened shook Jake at least, he wasn't sulking or irritated like he tends to be after a bad room."

Heiji nodded. "Well, he did get outta there without getting stabbed. I'd say that'd be a plus in his book."

Getting stabbed, man. It wasn't fun. "Wonder what's gonna happen after this next round. More Calhoun Hours? More robots?"

"Given how badly he was hurt in the first grey room I imagine it must be." Hershel shook his head. "At least he's been much more careful. I wasn't too worried, Clive's very good at these rooms after all."

"I hope not..." Sigh. Fuck robots. "Maybe he'll decide to celebrate some other holiday."

"You mean like New Year's or Valentine's Day?" Boy. That sounded fun. Robots trying to smooch the test subjects against their will...

"Although I guess the Christmas one wasn't so bad. We actually got somethin' useful out of that."

"Yes, something like that. I sincerely hope it won't be Valentine's Day, there's enough of Calhoun and his obsession with making us kiss going around." He's still bitter at his scarlet letter, so sue him.

"It will be nice to get more memories back." Might as well be optimistic and not focus on gross cooties and such.

"Whattaya think you're going to remember next? More about Angela and Randall? Or your folks, maybe?"

"I don't know, I mostly seem to have more recent memories, maybe I'll have something when I was younger? I'd like to remember a little more about my family, and Randall and Angela. I keep wondering if they stayed in Stansbury or went to school somewhere too- Randall I imagine must have wanted to go to Gressenheller, archeology fanatic that he seemed to be."

He glanced to Heiji. "What about you? Maybe you'll remember more about your family."

"I dunno. I used to think maybe I'd like to find out more about the girl from my first memory, but... I think it's fine if I don't remember right away. I mean, that'd kind of be like cheating, right?" Or. Close enough. Shh.

"Maybe it'd be nice to remember why I kept getting caught up in all these cases. Or... maybe some of my friends and family, yeah. That'd be nice."

"Maybe you'll remember that friend of yours." You know, the shitlord. Not highest level shitlord but up there. "I hope you can remember something a little more peaceful, less... well, kidnappings, bodies, things of that nature." Lightly teasing but okay yeah he's still got that worry train going about that I'm sorry dude.

"I do admit I'd like to hear how the story you have with that girl ends." Such a cute one.

"Yeah, maybe!" Heiji grinned happily at the thought. "Though I got a feeling he got into just as much trouble as I did."

He turned a little red at Hershel's next comment, glancing away. "Well... yeah, I guess I would, too. If only to know how it ended. But y'know, Kansai's a pretty big area. The chances of findin' someone like that years later, without any clues..."

"You are... well, you, Heiji. If anyone could find a needle in a haystack like that through sheer force of will it's probably you." Hershel answered with a smile. "Maybe a little luck too."

"And given the situations you remembered him in I'd say that's probably the case." He shook his head. "I'm glad you've probably had someone watching your back through all that."

Heiji laughed. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I really do hope ya remember more about your friends. They seemed pretty nice. Maybe you'll remember a crush or two."

Rest assured that if Hershel ever did, Heiji would be happy to return the shitlord favor...

Never, how dare you. He did laugh a bit at that. "I doubt it, don't get your hopes up. If I do remember something like that I'll let you know, I suppose you deserve it after all the grief I've given you over that sort of thing."

And he paused. "Just... don't tell Alfendi." He can't take anymore nectar talk.
