Every third day, there would normally be an Ambidex Round going on, but today, it's different. Calhoun still screeches for everyone to wake up, that will never change, but instead of trying to rush people into a Chromatic Door, he instead splits everyone up into groups.

Child Test Subject (Kariya) with Fancy Test Subject (Zelos)! That's Team One.

Team Two will have the Nice Test Subject (Hershel), Hat-wearing Test Subject (Akiko), and Ditzy Test Subject (Aoi)!

Team Three is the Giant Test Subject (Jake), Also Nice Test Subject (Colette), and the Blind Test Subject (Light)!

Finally, the rest will be Team Four, with Tiny Test Subject (Clive), Mean Test Subject (Heiji), and Will-Gladly-Drug-Again Test Subject (Ema).

Oh, why is Team One having only two people instead of three? Where is the French Test Subject (Enjorlas)? Well, he got sick too, there must be something going around, so he was also quarantined for this moment, but don't worry, Team One! Calhoun has something up his sleeves for you, so you're not missing out.

But anyway, each team needs to go into an AB Room and stay in there. This is going to be a fun game, and anyone who refuses? Well, then he can gladly make those bracelets go off, and then you can have a nice long death. It's up to you, really, but let's make this easy and have fun inside the rooms, okay?

Meanwhile, Heiji was frantically looking through his pockets and assorted stuff -- even his hat, but to no avail. Whatever he was looking for, it was obvious that he wasn't finding it. And it had been a good twelve days since he'd woken up here.

"Ugh, don't tell me I lost it!"

"Lost what?" he asks. "Did you lose some of your coins from the game?"

"Nah, my bead!" Heiji looked forlornly at Light, like maybe he could solve the problem with his amazing bionic arm or something.

"It's this little clear glass bead I found! It ain't in my pockets, I woulda noticed if I dropped it somewhere, and nobody would've stolen something like that!"

If you had it on you, it might have taken by Zero. *he hadn't heard about this bead before, did Heiji remember something.* What is its significance?

Heiji slumped over a little. "Don't say that out loud!" It might very well be true, though he couldn't see what significance Zero might find in something like that. To most people, it'd just look like Heiji had picked something off the street or something.

Which, to be fair, he had.

"It's the memory I got back! I remembered I found that bead when I was a little kid in Kyoto. Argh, if I'd remembered sooner, maybe I'd still have it..."

Oh? What else did you remember, other than you picking up a bead?

"Well, I know I went there with my folks on a trip. Somehow, I got must've gotten knocked out, because I woke up on the floor with some broken wood all around me. And I heard someone singin', so I ran over to the window and looked out.

There was this little girl under a big sakura tree, with this brightly-colored kimono. She was playing with a ball while she sang. While I was watching, the wind picked up all of a sudden, and when I looked back outside, she was gone.

So I ran out after her, but she just vanished! All I could find was this little glass bead under the tree, right in the spot where she was standing. She must have left it behind when she left." See, Light? Clearly, this was a case of DESTINY.

So you picked up a bead from someone you saw once and...hold on. *Mulls over what he said* You don't seem too perturbed by the fact you were knocked out as a small child.

"Well," said Heiji, looking a little taken aback. "Every kid gets banged around a little, right? It's all part of growing up."

Yes, Heiji. Losing consciousness (which was super bad for you, btw) was totally like a rite of passage.

There's a difference between tripping over your own two feet and just not remembered what happened to you. Yours is an interesting existence, Heiji.

I managed to learn a bit more about myself.

Heiji stuck out his tongue at Light.

"So? Tell me all about it!"

I am apparently studying for my PhD in physics and about to work on my dissertation. I also found out my last name and that I'm 24.

What the hell, why was everyone older than Heiji? Also kidnapping sounded like it would kind of put a crimp on those dissertation plans.

"O-oh... Well, whattaya know; I thought you were a little younger. What's your last name? And what's your dissertation on, or is that not part of the memory?"

"What, about your age, whatever that actually is? Sixteen or seventeen? Apparently not." The slightly annoyed tone in Heiji's voice was amusing. "I do hope that doesn't affect our friendship in any way. My last name is Averly and I hadn't quite picked one subject. It was either going to be about string theory or dark matter." So generally, really light beside reading.

It was less that Heiji was annoyed, and more that he was a little... well, taken aback. He'd just sort of assumed that Light had Old Man Face and that Clive was seventeen, tops, and that Jake actually was an old man. Next someone was going to be telling him that Akiko was a mother of three.

"Don't see why it would. Just kinda threw me for a loop, is all. So... what were you doin' in this memory, anyway? Studying?"

[ Hope it wasn't anything important. ]

Heiji looked somewhere between annoyed and angry -- mostly at Calhoun, although there was plenty of blame left for Zero. "If I did, it's gotta be in one of them Ambidex Rooms. Only they're locked up tight right now."

Not to mention that they'd have been filled with water and drained. If he'd lost it in there, his baby might have very well gotten thrown out with the bathwater.

Yeah? And what was it?

[ Everyone arrived with nothing, so it's probably something Heiji stole from the rooms. The guy seemed to have a million things. ]

Heiji raised one hand and measured out maybe half a centimeter between his thumb and forefinger. "Tiny little glass bead, about this big. Not colored, might be a little banged up by now."

Where'd you get something like that?

Hmm, yeah. Jake didn't seem like the kind of person who'd appreciate secret shoujo romance. In fact, he was probably the kind that ate secret shoujo romance for breakfast.

"...I found it. Didn't remember about it till now, of course. Why, ya seen it around?"

[ Nooooooot really. As you can see, Jake is a macho man who has no time for secret shoujo romance. ]

Of course I didn't. If you lost it, the rat might have already taken it by now.

Heiji let out a long-suffering sigh. "Ugh, don't even mention that thing. So what's your deal? You go for a memory, or BP?"
