ambidex voting #15

A M B I D E X  V O T I N G

Once everyone exits their respective rooms, Zero's voice will be heard over the speakers:

"Proceed into the Ambidex Rooms and cast your vote. You will be given 45 minutes to decide."

And with that, the elevator doors open and the PA system turns itself off. It seems as if there are no rewards or any of that nonsense this time around...

Hershel shook his head, tone apologetic. "Alright, I'm sorry if I was pushing, I didn't mean to be." He stood a little slowly, man, hours of sleep sure felt good. A fan of that. "You probably know him best now, after this. I'm sure whatever you ultimately do will be for the best."

Even if he couldn't really agree on the not telling Sasuke front, but wayyyy too much of a doormat to push that anymore with only the information he had.

"I don't know about that," said Heiji, scrubbing a hand through his hair. He really wasn't looking forward to it, honestly. "But I do wanna try and make sure he's okay."

Well. As okay as possible, anyway. "So you feel like gettin' something to eat? You been asleep for a while now."

"Heiji, you care about him a great deal, no matter what happens he'll know that and it will mean something." Hershel offered with a small, vaguely awkward smile.

He considered a moment- he really didn't feel all that hungry but appetite was a little hard to come by when the menu was grey, grey, lumps and more grey. "Yes, I suppose I should- we should, really. To the cafeteria, then?" And he paused a moment. "You don't happen to have any plastic, or something that could cover a burn without getting caught in the wound like gauze would?"

Hershel you should probably explain why you want this instead of standing there, looking thoughtful about it.

Heiji made a face. "Plastic? I could see if there's anything left in my first aid kit, but shouldn't you let burns breathe a little instead of trapping the moisture in like that? And who the heck got burned?"

Was it Jake, it was always Jake...

It was a little of both but you know, Jake's the one who's got the slightly fucked up hand. Shockingly barely his fault this time too, what are the odds. "It's more a scald, Jake's hand seems alright but I was a little worried about leaving it open to infection incase it did blister at all."

He shrugged a bit helplessly, medical knowledge, who did he look like, a handsome Japanese doctor just trying to make it to a better tomorrow. "Maybe leaving it be would be better then."

Yikes, dude. "Well, then you've got more than one problem on your hands. I think I've got some of that antiseptic gunk left, but you know how Jake is about accepting help. Did he at least run it under water? He shoulda, even if he couldn't do it right away..."

Although if he didn't, too late now.

"It hasn't really blistered, but it's quite red- do you think it'll be a problem?" He assumed Jake's usually shit of just punching robots wouldn't fly. "He was a bit stubborn but he listened eventually, I got him to pour some cold water over it after we were done with the room. It was all I could really think to do."

He really needed to learn first aid...

"Depends on how bad the scald is, really," said Heiji. It'd really be best if he could see it himself...

"But Jake knows first aid, right? He should at least know enough to dunk his hand in some water afterwards." So why didn't he? Pride? Because he'd deemed the injury minor?

As they arrived in the cafeteria, Heiji grabbed a tray. "You know what, we never really got around to talking about how to treat wounds, did we? Let's do that after this."

"He does, he was teaching me a bit." Hershel answered, shaking his head. "We didn't have the time in our room to stop and do that I'm afraid, not much water around either. After the room he put his hand in the stream but I don't know how much it helped, really, after so long."

He paused as he grabbed his tray. "Really, you wouldn't mind? The more any of us know the better, I suppose. With the way things are going-" He shrugged. He kind of expected a few injuries this round of rooms.

"Yeah, no problem." Heiji sat back and dug a spoon into the gruel, boy oh boy. "...Hey, Hershel. Do you think we might be thinking about this all wrong? Our situation, I mean."

"Taking away someone's memories and bringing them back, that's one thing. It's possible in theory because you don't really erase them... you prevent that person from being able to access those memories for a while, that's all. But giving me someone else's memory, that's something else altogether. It's not like I could have gotten it back, because it didn't happen to me in the first place, understand?

"The ability to take someone's memories, store them, and give them to someone else... that's something no one can do. No one I've heard of, anyway. It's the same with Calhoun -- why didn't we recognize the machinery making him work?"

Hershel glanced up from his delicious food, regarding Heiji curiously as he spoke. As he went his brow furrowed too, because he had a feeling what Heiji was getting at.

"Not only that but if Calhoun really is an AI that's far beyond anything that should be possible, at least from what little I can remember." He added. "But what do you think that means? Zero clearly has access to resources and technology we seem barely able to comprehend."

"Well, we been at this from every logical angle, right? But none of the conclusions we've been coming to have made much sense," said Heiji. He tapped his fingers on the surface of the table. "In that case, maybe we need to re-examine our premises. Who, what, and where we are."

He deliberately left out the when. "When the blackout happened, the heat started to go real fast. That would suggest that wherever we are, it's somewhere that's similarly cold. Underground maybe, or somewhere with a naturally cold climate.

"There're multiple generators here, which we saw, and the doors around here are more than strong enough to ensure that a normal person or even multiple people can't get out if they're locked down. Sounds like a bunker with redundant power sources to me. And what do people use bunkers for?"
